NEWS - Usenet
The News system on the Internet is called Usenet...and it is not
really news, its more like electronic discussion groups. The
hierarchy of Usenet is described in the Newslist file which you can
download by clicking below and going File|Save As
Usenet is available online to PlaNet Communications subscribers by
setting the news-server to "news.ak.planet.gen.nz"
or "news.bopis.co.nz" or "news.wk.planet.gen.nz" as appropriate
to your region. Then open the
newsgroup of your choice using the File|Open Newsgroup command (or
something similar, see Daily News in the NOTICES section).
Usenet is also available to email only users
via UUCP (at a cost of $50/yr).
PlaNet Communications only carries newsgroups that people have requested.
So if you can't find a newsgroup online even though it is
listed in the newslist,
please Email The Office with your
requested newsgroups. After all, Usenet traffic volumes are over 600
Megs per day!
You can of course read Usenet overseas, but then the traffic generated will
be expensive international traffic - and that's not being very
cooperative. Usenet read locally is a zero
traffic item in terms of our link usage.
